The Golden Quill Award is presented to a CASCI Member each year at the annual statewide CASCI conference. This award recognizes the recipient's notable contributions and extraordinary efforts to further the goals of CASCI during the year or over a period of time.
The award was first presented to John McCarthy of Merced County, at the inaugural CASCI conference in 1978. Mr. McCarthy was not only a Court Investigator, he was also a Traffic Court Referee. He was known for his creativity and colorful pen, particularly in his courtesy (reciprocal) reports. In accepting the first award, John wrote to President Dennis Jones:
“It is with pulsating heart and soaring spirit that I humbly acknowledge and accept the honor afforded me in conjunction with your gracious presentation of the Golden Quill Award. I truly regret that I was not present to bask in the warm glow of standing ovation and frenzied accolades as my peers expressed their tumultuous tribute. My joy was somewhat dampened when, in a burst of enthusiasm and pride, I showed the award to my judge and he grumped, ‘I always knew you were full of BS, but this is ludicrous.’ I attribute his remarks to an over-indulgence of sour grapes. It is my intention to have the scroll suitably framed and it shall hang in a place of honor between my dishonorable discharge and my membership plaque in the Volta Marching Society Band and Chowder Club. Please accept my sincere appreciation for a truly thoughtful gesture. The award has precipitated much merriment and I vow to attend any subsequent meeting, if only to protect my position.”
